The Benson Portland, Currio Collection

SERVICE & CHECKIN -- I can't rave about customer service or checkin experience on this one unfortunately, but it wasn't terrible.

Early checkin was free, with 1hr late checkout offered (also free).

They collect a lot of information even when booking 3rd party & w/o a vehicle. Tap payment also wasn't working/available.

Streamlining those two things would definitely speed up the process.

Staff spent a lot of time distracted on phones or listening to music & unaware.

Phone related service was also difficult: half of our calls went unanswered & the room phones weren't fully functional.

$75/n deposit

LOBBY, ELEVATOR, CORRIDORS -- A gorgeous interior & lounge space that more than makes up for the service wait.

It was indisputably clean & the transitions were equally classy. Linger a while, it's worth it!

... But someone should refill the empty sanitizers dispensers (couldn't find a single working unit).

ROOM (guest room) -- You can smell the clean!

The entrance width was awkward but it opened up to a spacious room with a relaxing color palette.

Perfect size for a couple & strong features: good lighting, entryway closet+ large dresser storage, functional windows, & adequate tabletop space.

Overall, very functional.

The carpet in this one is near end of life; not the best condition wrt stains.

BED -- Plush, intimate, & good sleep quality.

The low base was a nice change, pilled high with throw pillows & blankets.

Premium linens compliment the mattress (Tempurpedic) very well.

Pillows were equally comfortable and supportive.

BATH -- High-cleaning standards on display, designed with quality fixtures & attractive tiling.

Its a smaller bathroom space with proportional fixtures, but not cramped,

Standard streamline walk-in glass shower, featuring designer (Lockwood) bath products,

Good water pressure & choice of shower head.

100% cotton Bathrobes available by request. They're a bit on the heavy side, which is nice on colder days.

TV & ENTERTAINMENT -- The perfect staycation TV: LG 55" 4K UHD TV 🤩-- unbelievable picture quality on these.

Excellent choice of wall mount too, with enough tilt to view comfortably from every corner.

Standard Marriott TV solution + basic programming.

WI-FI & CELL RECEPTION -- Premium WiFi will cost you $20/day which is egregiously overpriced. Its not fiber & the complimentary offering is "good enough" for light use.

T-Mobile & Verizon carrier performance is great in this area so hotspot is also an option.

FOOD & DRINK -- Not DoorDash friendly but the room service menu was allergen-friendly & very enticing.

The flow to order room service was awkward (call front desk -> front desk calls restaurant -> restaurant calls you back), but the food was worth the hassle.

The Tenderloin Diablo & Burger we tried were delicious: perfect temperature on the proteins & a masterful fry.

Water, medium mini-fridge, & coffee available in-room.

The repurposed mini fridge was painful to use due to the lock-mechanism. Such a clunky & odd user experience...

NOISE -- Mostly Quiet... Indoor vacuuming can be obnoxiously noisy, along with the usual sounds of Portland's downtown.

VERDICT

Aurora's (iPrefer) has the better "Benson", but this one was nice, albeit 'quirky' on hospitality follow through.

The staff seemed to be low on morale or uninterested but there was one gentlemen that was engaging & seemed to care about our stay.

His efforts made a great impression on us & we enjoyed our stay.

I could see myself staying here again & would recommend it for the accommodations.

3.5/5 ⭐️
